Draupadi Murmu, an Odisha-based Santal leader, has been named the BJP-led NDA alliance’s nominee for the July 18th presidential election. From 2015 until 2018, Draupadi presided as the governor of Jharkhand.
The 64-year-old Draupadi, an ardent BJP activist from the heartland of Odisha, may become the first tribal woman to hold the highest post since Independence. On Twitter, PM Modi stated that he believes Murmu will be a fantastic president. She was named the Governor of Jharkhand in 2015 at the age of 59.
She was elected as the state’s first female governor. She is also the first governor in Jharkhand to serve her entire term. Draupadi worked as a junior assistant in the government of Odisha’s irrigation and power department from 1979 to 1983. She worked as an honorary assistant teacher at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Center in Rairangpur from 1994 to 1997.
As a Rairangpur district elected councillor, Murmu entered politics in 1997. Since that time, the tenacious tribal chief has not looked back. When she was appointed to her first position as a minister by the BJD and BJP coalition government, she was an MLA from Rairangpur (Odisha) and the Minister of State for the Department of Commerce. Additionally, she served as the state president of the BJP’s ST Morcha in Odisha. She had previously been given consideration by the centre as a candidate for president in 2017, but Ram Nath Kovind took the lead.
The opposition’s candidate, Yashwant Sinha of the TMC, an ex-BJP lawmaker, will compete against Draupadi Murmu. In the meantime, Murmu thanked the prime minister on Twitter for considering her for the position.
